News Reports

"My news report was on........" Those are the five words that start us off for the morning. Room 6 has entered the adult world by watching the news every night, listening to the radio or going onto the internet and choosing what news item we are going to talk about the following morning. We are given a sheet for the activity, on that sheet it has different questions that you will answer by watching, listening or going on the internet. The questions were: What was the event? Where was the event? Who was involved? Why was it news worthy?

Spanish

Hola!
In Room 6 the whole class has been learning a new language. Can you guess what it is? If you said it was Spanish you are correct!

Mrs Hosie gave us a folder in which we will put activity sheets that we have completed. We have been learning the alphabet in Spanish. We would write it like this: El Alfabeto. We have learnt different ways to greet each other in Spanish as well.

For one of our home work activities we were given a sheet called a K.W.H.L and a little map of the Spanish speaking world. We had to label the countries where Spanish was spoken. For instance: Mexico, the Philippines and so on. Then we had to choose what country we wanted to find information about. The sheet had four categories. The first category was what you knew already about the country that you had chosen. The second category was what you want to know about the country. The third category is how would you find out the information that you needed, and the fourth category is to show what you have learnt about that country at the end of your research.
So far learning Spanish has been a great opportunity for us and it has been fun as well!

Water cycle

As well as the experiments we have been investigating the water cycle. We have had to draw and explain how the water cycle works. First we had to watch a movie about the water cycle then we got some information about each part.then we put the information on to paper then we add did pitchers and this is what some turned out like.

Reading

In Room 6 we have been doing and learning new ways to record our reading. We have been given a chart full with different ways to use our reading skills and we use our information report books to help us get the information that we need. The chart is called Blooms on one side it has the activities and on the other we have to write the assignment tasks that we have chosen once we have done an activity we will get a point as a reward for completing a task. Here are how much points we get according to blooms: For Remembering=1 point,Understanding=1 point, Applying=2 points, Analysing=2 points, Creating=4 points and Evaluating=4 points as well.So far reading has been great and I'm sure that this reading has and will give us more knowledge to help us through the future.

Mad Scientists at Mapua

This term we are learning about Changes as part of our Science topic. On Monday the 19th we were given a candle, two cups with water in them and two small nails. First we had to measure to find the half way point on the candle. Mrs H drilled one hole on opposite sides of the halfway point. Then we were given two nails which we put in where Mrs H had drilled the holes. Next we put the cups with water in them beside each other far enough apart to allow the candle to be suspended on the nails, without touching the cups. When we had made sure that both sides were level we were able to light both ends of the candle. If the candle did not balance, we cut some wax off until it was right. We had a piece of paper with questions on it that we had to answer.
Below is a movie of what happened.

What we found out: That you have to level it to keep it straight. That as the wax melts at one end it goes up because it is lighter, the end that is down then melts the wax faster than the other ed and so eventually it gets lighter due to losing the wax and so it swings down, now the other end melts more wax until it becomes lighter and swings bak up. This seesaw motion keeps going as the candle burns. It stops when all the candle has been burnt.
The candle wax changed from solid to liquid to solid again.

(Hope you liked the movie's background music. It was created by some of our boys last year.)

Top 5 qualities of a good learner

In our recent poll (or study) about what qualities make a good learner, we found that most of the people who voted thought that the best qualities for being a good learner were being focussed, followed closely by a good sense of humour, third equal were co-operation, good attitude and listening carefully.

We discussed the results and could understand why most people thought being focussed was important because if you are focussed you get all tasks completed and learn more.
We think that people voted for sense of humour because you have to try and make learning fun and enjoyable. We learn best when we are happy. We agree with all the other qualities too.

We would like to thank the people who took the time to vote and make comments.
